INFORMATIONAL POSTER
THE POSTER
For my senior capstone project, I wanted to expand on my biology minor and speculate on the evolutionary future of coral reefs in response to climate change. The first project I did, as an introduction to the topic of how coral has been responding to climate change so far, was a poster on coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef. It covers some of the causes for bleaching, how much hard coral cover exists in the GBR at this time, and a brief timeline of some of the most recent major bleaching events observed.

DESIGN PROCESS AND REVISIONS
Above are some of the first sketches I did for this assignment. I was hoping to create a grid-reliant layout with a lot of graphic elements that (hopefully) achieved the look of "pleasantly cluttered". The poster went through several revisions throughout the design process, as shown below.

Final poster design
After several weeks of revisions and critiques, the poster design was finalized and printed to turn in. Below is the final product! While it definitely doesn't match my sketch beat for beat, I'm happy with how it came out in the end.

SPECULATIVE ART BOOK
THE book
For my second senior capstone project, I wanted to create an informational booklet designed to educate people about coral reef bleaching, evolution by natural selection, and how corals might evolve to respond to our rapidly changing climate. At the same time as my senior capstone class, I was also taking an ecology and evolution class, so I was excited to combine the two topics. Below is the first sketch I did for proposing the concept for my second prototype. I knew right away that I wanted to have some sort of interactive elements like clear or vellum paper gradually revealing certain design elements, adding some more dimension to the book, but I later decided on adding a fold-out page as well.
PROCESS AND DESIGN
The interior design went through a lot of trial and error, and it grew frustrating at times. It was one of those projects where no matter what you do, you feel like you're mashing your brain against a brick wall because the design isn't doing what you want it to and you aren't sure how to fix it. Eventually I decided to just scrap what I had so far and start fresh on a new document, and the soft reset got the ideas flowing again.

First (back) and second (front) drafts of some of the page layouts. I ended up abandoning the first draft when the designs weren’t clicking in my brain as well as I needed them to and went in a whole new direction with different colors and typefaces.

The final spreads for the booklet as well as the color and type selections.
